The Torres del Paine massif seen from the Mirador Base de las Torres

How this was checked

230 sources, independently verified

Eight research passes, adversarial fact-checking, and a full bibliography of every claim behind this site.

01How this was researched

Eight parallel research agents (A–H) each produced an independent report, then a second agent adversarially verified it: re-fetching primary sources, re-deriving coordinates/ephemeris independently, and spot-checking links rather than trusting the original write-up. A ninth cross-check pass re-read all sixteen files together hunting for places where two already-verified files still disagreed, running fresh primary-source fetches to adjudicate. All work is dated 2026-08-11.

Honest access limits

Instagram, TikTok, Threads, and X were never searched (login walls): no handles or engagement numbers from those platforms appear anywhere here. AllTrails and 500px mostly defeated automated scraping (Cloudflare); a handful of AllTrails pages loaded via a real-browser tool and are cited where that happened. Locationscout's text was reachable but its GPS is login-gated, so every coordinate here traces instead to PhotoHound, OSM/Nominatim, or Wikipedia. TripAdvisor, Wikiloc, and Fred Miranda weren't systematically searched (the forum pass scoped to Reddit); TripAdvisor/Wikiloc surface later, piecemeal, mostly returning HTTP 403. Treat any single-platform claim from these sources as weaker than it looks.

02Verification scoreboard

Each verifier pass sorted every claim into four buckets: confirmed (independently re-checked, correct), corrected (wrong/stale/mis-cited, fixed in place), refuted (actively false), and unverifiable (no independent source either way, left honestly hedged). Counts below are per-file, from each verifier's own tally.

AreaFileConfirmedCorrectedRefutedUnverifiableHeadline correction
Aa-forums.md
Reddit/forum deep mine
9307 Los Glaciares entry fee stale at ARS 45,000 → fixed to ARS 50,000; TdP ticketing status resolved (live May 1, 2026); Mirador Los Cuernos coordinate flagged as mislabeled.
Bb-platforms.md
PhotoHound, Locationscout, OSM, Bluesky, YouTube
15505 Laguna Torre elevation gain corrected ~250 m → ~475–535 m; two claims (Piedra del Fraile, Tony J Hughes' route) were re-attributed to sources that don't actually say them.
Cc-pros.md
Professional photography sources
23606 TdP camping booking lead time corrected 3–4 months → 5–6 months (urgent for this trip); Mirador Cuernos coordinate confirmed wrong. Its sourced TdP day-price, CLP 80,900, was later rejected at cross-check; see §3.2.
Dd-logistics.md
Flights, buses, border, tickets
15208 Camping fee corrected ARS 20,000 → 15,000 in this file's own verifier pass; itself superseded to ARS 30,000 at cross-check, see §3.1. Turismo Zaahj bus schedule was mis-attributed.
Ee-lodging.md
Camping & lodging
12416 Los Glaciares fee framing was stale/tiered → fixed to flat ARS 50,000; Hotel Las Torres rate understated ($820 → $1,070+/night for the 2026–27 season); Chileno own-tent camping confirmed available, refuting a competing claim.
Ff-conditions.md
Light, weather & conditions
19307 Perito Moreno hours "conflict" resolved via an official page (08:00–18:00 entry / 20:00 permanence, both true at once); a Las Torres astro citation for Laguna Amarga night reflections was found unsupported and downgraded.
Gg-spring.md
Spring-specific opportunities
111005 Mirador Británico access cutoff corrected morning → afternoon (~3pm); a "verbatim" Craft Travel quote was fabricated and fixed; overstated wind-severity claim softened.
Hh-drone.md
Drone legality & fly zones
21506 DGAC contact number had transposed digits, fixed; El Calafate-to-park distance corrected ~50 km → ~80 km; El Chaltén's park-land-cession history was conflated with an unrelated 2025/26 deal and corrected.
Totals 12538150 214 individual claims adjudicated across 8 files. 1 refutation (a single-source lodging claim in e-lodging.md, contradicted by the operator's own booking page).

A verifier pass is not a ceiling on error. Two "corrected" figures above, the Los Glaciares camping fee (D) and the TdP day-entry price (C), were still wrong after their own file's independent re-check, and only got fixed one layer up, at the cross-file cross-check pass (walked through in §3). Treat every number here as good as of 2026-08-11, not permanently settled: Argentina and Chile have both repriced park fees mid-year before.

03Resolved contradictions

Cross-file adjudication from cross-check.md §1: places where two already-verified files still disagreed after their own verifier passes, resolved here with a fresh primary-source fetch.

3.1 · Los Glaciares camping fee — ARS 30,000/night, not 15,000

a-forums.md and d-logistics.md each verified ARS 15,000 pp/night (Poincenot/Laguna Capri/De Agostini), citing the official reservation page plus secondary blogs. c-pros.md and e-lodging.md each verified ARS 30,000, citing the same official page on the same date. A fresh cross-check fetch of amigospnlosglaciares.org/campamentos/ settled it: the live page reads "Adultos $30.000 Por persona." official

Verdict: ARS 30,000/night is correct and current (Aug 2026): 15,000 was the Dec 2024 launch price, which e-lodging.md's own sourcing already flags. Use ARS 30,000 pp/night (~USD 20) for all camping budget math. Source: amigospnlosglaciares.org/campamentos/.

3.2 · TdP day-entry price — CLP 32,400/48,500, not 80,900

d-logistics.md and a-forums.md both fetched the live official pages (parquetorresdelpaine.cl/tarifas-y-horarios/, torresdelpaine.com), post-May-1-2026 go-live: CLP 32,400 single-day / 48,500 multi-day, foreign adult. c-pros.md, citing The Clinic's Dec 17, 2025 report of CONAF's pre-implementation announcement, sourced CLP 80,900, a claimed 76% pre-launch rise. A fresh cross-check re-fetch confirmed the live page still shows 32,400/48,500. official

Verdict: trust CLP 32,400 / 48,500: budget ~USD 33–53 pp, not ~USD 85. Per-sector (Base Torres/W/O) pricing remains genuinely unpublished anywhere any agent could find (a real gap, not a contradiction); see §4.

3.3 · Laguna de los Tres — plan for frozen, not turquoise

g-spring.md, via 3+ independent Tripadvisor threads, found the lake reported frozen until roughly Nov 15–20 (some years to Nov 30): this trip's Oct 28–Nov 5 window sits squarely inside that. a-forums.md and b-platforms.md separately cite an "~80% thawed" report, but that report's date (and a later one) both fall in the back half of November, after the frozen window, not inside this trip's dates. Not actually incompatible once dated precisely.

Verdict — the single highest-value expectation-setter in this research: budget the Fitz Roy sunrise shot as a white/gray ice-bowl composition, not the turquoise-lake postcard; treat any open water as a bonus from an unusually early thaw. corroborated

3.4 · Other cross-file consensus findings (not contradictions)

  • Los Glaciares entrance fee, ARS 50,000/foreigner (eff. June 1, 2026, both sectors, single ticket): confirmed across a-forums, c-pros, d-logistics, e-lodging. corroborated
  • "Mirador Los Cuernos" coordinate is mislabeled: it's the Salto Grande/Pudeto parking area (~85–150 m off), not the real viewpoint ~3–6 km further down the trail. Agreed by a-forums, b-platforms, c-pros, g-spring; effectively a refuted waypoint. corroborated
  • Perito Moreno boardwalk hours (entry 08:00–18:00, permanence to 20:00, no sunrise/sunset access): reconciled across c-pros, d-logistics, f-conditions.
  • Drone bans in both parks: consistent across a-forums, b-platforms, c-pros, g-spring, h-drone. Unresolved: specific outside-park boundaries, Chile's sub-750 g exemption, carried to §4.
  • Wind severity: f-conditions and g-spring both softened to "very windy, building toward a Dec–Jan peak," not "the windiest month."

04Open questions

Unresolved after both the per-file verifier passes and the cross-file adjudication. Each has a concrete next action, not just a caveat.

El Calafate ↔ Puerto Natales border route — distance, time, pavement

Three incompatible pictures: a ~265–286 km route with a gravel tail vs. a longer ~341–390 km route via La Esperanza; one first-hand account says "avoid Ruta 7," a professional overlander account says the opposite (Ruta 7 is the paved good road, Ruta 40 is brutal dirt). Up to a ~120 km / 1.5 h swing. unresolved

Next: live Google/Waze route check, plus a call to the rental agency about which road they route customers on, in the weeks before departure.

Chile: can a tourist legally fly a sub-750 g consumer drone at all?

Two secondary sources flatly contradict each other (one says the 750 g exemption applies only to foam/EPP drones, not standard plastic/carbon consumer drones; another frames it more permissively). The DAN 151 Ed.4 primary regulation text is a real, live official PDF no tool used could extract as text. unresolved

Next: email pplasser@dgac.gob.cl / +56 2 2439 2692 (DGAC Airworthiness) before deciding which drone(s) travel to the Chile leg.

TdP per-sector ticket prices & caps (Base Torres / W / O / day-access)

Only the blanket single-day (CLP 32,400) / multi-day (CLP 48,500) figures are published anywhere across all eight files. Category-specific pricing, and whether the O Circuit's daily quota differs from Base Torres/W access, isn't in a clean table from CONAF or pasesparques.cl.

Next: run a dry-run checkout on pasesparques.cl closer to departure to see real per-sector prices and caps.

Pudeto ↔ Paine Grande catamaran, Oct–Nov 2026 sailing frequency

Three independent agents (d-logistics, f-conditions, g-spring) each hit the same unrendered catamaranpehoe.com/precios-y-horarios template: no schedule data retrievable by any tool used. A real scheduling risk for any Mirador Británico/French Valley day plan, not just a research gap.

Next: email reservas@catamaranpehoe.com directly before finalizing which TdP day includes Británico.

Ruta 23 pullout / Laguna Amarga steppe — actual park-boundary polygon

Duane's "outside-park, therefore drone-legal" claims for these specific spots are plausible but unconfirmed: no GIS/official park-boundary map source was found or fetchable by any agent.

Next: check a Gaia GPS or OSM boundary-polygon layer on the ground before flying anywhere not visually and obviously outside a park entrance gate. Default to grounded.

Laguna Amarga gate opening hour — 07:00 vs. 08:30

Sources conflict; no primary CONAF hours-by-gate table was found (e-lodging, f-conditions). One cited page's 08:30–20:30 figure applies only to the Laguna Azul/Sarmiento gates, not Amarga.

Next: confirm directly with CONAF / torres-del-paine.com before finalizing the Base Torres day-trip-vs-Chileno-night decision.

Base Torres "assigned time slot" under the new ticketing system

Single-sourced to calafate.tours: not independently corroborated or refuted by any verifier pass. single Next: verify against the actual CONAF/pasesparques.cl booking flow when purchasing tickets.

None of the seven items above are individually fatal to the trip, but the border-crossing time budget and TdP per-sector pricing/caps feed directly into the day-by-day itinerary math. See Itinerary for how they're currently treated as live risks, not solved variables.
