Two cars, one bus
Cars can't cross the border one-way: rental #1 works Argentina, rental #2 works Chile, the Zaahj bus stitches them together. Self-drive is what buys dawn positioning; the park bus arrives 3 h after sunrise.
02Flights
The return-day call: both northbound options are red-eyes: no same-day arrival exists. Leave Patagonia Thu Nov 5, land ATL early Fri Nov 6 with a full recovery day. Book the earliest workable Nov 5 regional flight on one through ticket; the carrier owns any misconnect.
Open-jaw is correct: in via EZE→FTE, out via PUQ/PNT→SCL. Both legs Delta metal: multi-city prices near round-trip. Planning number $1,100–1,600 pp Aug snapshot.
Flight detail — frequencies, AEP warning, SCL–PNT direct
Argentina: EZE→FTE 11×/week (Aerolíneas + JetSMART), ~3h15–20m. Prefer EZE over AEP: AEP adds a 22–25 mi cross-town transfer. Aerolíneas is SkyTeam/Delta codeshare: book ATL→FTE as one itinerary.
Chile: SCL→PUQ is LATAM-only since mid-2026, 22×/week. SCL→PNT direct runs ~6×/week (~3h25m), skipping the 3 h Punta Arenas–Natales drive; verify the exact days single-sourced. Delta–LATAM JV covers ATL→PUQ/PNT one-ticket.
One-way pricing: SCL→PUQ from ~$67; EZE/AEP→FTE $60–150.

Self-drive reality — ripio, fuel, IDP, offline maps, cell gaps
Argentina
US license works (IDP optional but cheap insurance). FTE–Calafate–Chaltén fully paved; RN40/RP23 stretches are washboard: ≤37 mph, watch guanacos. Fuel: fill in El Calafate (YPF 24 h); La Esperanza is the reliable midpoint; skip Tapi Aike. Carry ARS cash: card terminals fail.
Chile
US license accepted 90 days; IDP recommended. Paved to ~6–12 mi from the park, then washboard, blind crests, one-lane bridges, car-shoving wind. High-clearance SUV worth it; 4×4 not required. Natales is the last fuel: a shooting day runs 155–186 mi RT; top off every pass.
Maps: Google offline (Santa Cruz + Magallanes) + Maps.me/OsmAnd for ripio detail; paper backup near the border: apps disagree on numbering there.
Cell: long dead zones on RN40/RP23; Entel owns Magallanes. TdP is near-zero signal: dual eSIMs (Claro AR + Entel CL), treat the park as offline.

04Border crossing
Cancha Carrera (AR exit) → Cerro Castillo (CL entry). US passports, no visa, no fee; minimal English needed. Keep every slip handed to you (especially PDI). Factory-sealed food passes; fruit, meat, dairy, honey get confiscated and fined. Camera and drone gear pass without issue.
Unresolved: the drive distance if we self-drove this leg
Two irreconciled pictures: Route A ~165–180 mi with a gravel tail (~5–6 h) vs Route B ~211–242 mi fully paved via La Esperanza (~4.5–5.5 h + border). Sources even disagree which road is the paved one. Don't lock this leg without a live Maps check + a call to the rental agency; one more reason the bus is right: the ambiguity becomes the operator's problem.

05Park tickets
TdP (pasesparques.cl): live since May 1. Use CLP 32,400 single / 48,500 multi-day: the CLP 80,900 press figure was a pre-launch proposal, dead. Multi-day likely required for touching Base Torres + Británico. No published caps; Base Torres reportedly carries a time slot single-sourced. No changes, no refunds: buy late, deliberately.
Los Glaciares (ventaweb, card-only QR): ARS 50,000 per visit, Chaltén and Perito Moreno each a separate charge. FlexiPass 7 (~$105) worth it for ~4 Chaltén days or a re-shot sunrise confirm on ventaweb. Perito Moreno boardwalks run 08:00–20:00: no dawn/dusk shooting; Safari Náutico boat ~ARS 30,000.
Catamaran caveat: Pudeto ⇄ Paine Grande frequency for our window is unretrievable online (site renders broken; one dated source says 1 RT/day: 10:30 out, 17:30 back). Email reservas@catamaranpehoe.com before finalizing the Británico day: a missed return boat means an unplanned night at Paine Grande.

What each step up actually buys, photographically
Lean → Balanced buys real new shots: the catamaran opens Mirador Británico + French Valley; plus the Perito Moreno boat angle and one splurge dawn (Río Serrano tier). It buys nothing toward thaw, border speed, or red-eye timing.
Balanced → Comfortable's highest-leverage item is the Los Glaciares FlexiPass: a second attempt at a blown sunrise, not a better view of the same one. Hotel Las Torres does NOT beat Camping Central photographically: both ~4 h out; Chileno is the real upgrade.
